So what finish to go for for the steel rings - i know what you shout - what other colour is there for hardware apart from chrome and shiny but.. you would not have considered the possibilities of anodising and brushed aluminium. As i already possess a brushed aluminium bar to support my midi rack I can tell you in no uncertain terms that it is very shiny although moving the hardware around doe leave unsightly scratches :]. The idea of a Black shiny steer ring however touches something deep in my metal soul - these are all things to be considered. The main benefit of this system (practically) would be you can mount everything off it exactally where you want it and then sit on it .. given my vast girth it might be a good idea to make it stable on its own so i don't overbalance the entire setup which would of course be very embarrassing to be shown to weight more than a 7 piece drum kit and a half ton of steel tubing... Yes well anyway it would be amazingly steady, AND you could put the whole thing on rubber feet and have PROPPER mounting points for the Bass drums, none of this terrible scratching the shells and clamping the beater onto the tension hoop. It would be possible to have almost floating mounts and a specific screw down plate for the pedals. I think the toms would still be mounted on the bass drums, and I'm unsure about how to do the snare, maybe there is the possibility of a second chord in the upper ring to hold the front of the bass drums and the toms and snare. This would be easy to clamp on but might spoil the esthetics. Failing this the drums could be placed on stands clamped to the bottom or top ring like extension cymbal arms. another picture of how I imagine the rings to work.
